Overview

The word cataract has its origin from one of the Greek words called katarraktes. In earlier times, people believed that it is caused by a congealed fluid that made its way from the brain to the lens of your eyes in the front position. But today, studies have shown that it is the clouding of your eye lens.

But how does this clouding occur?

When clumps are formed because of the proteins present in the lens, there is a muddle in the vision in the form of clouds as well as a hazy outline which is the beginning of this disease. Gradually it increases and starts interfering in your vision and requires treatment. At Sattva Eye Care, our highly-trained ophthalmologists are there to get you the right treatment.

Symptoms of Cataract:

  • Slowly progressive diminution of vision
  • Frequent change in refractive error
  • Night glare
  • Haloes
  • Decreased contrast sensitivity

The one major reason behind having cataracts is your Age. Besides this, the following are the other causes:

  • Metabolic diseases like Diabetes Mellitus
  • Hypertension
  • Unprotected sunlight exposure
  • Long term Medication especially steroids
  • Traumatic injury to the eye
  • Excessive smoking
  • Obesity
  • Family history

If your usual activities are interfered due to the cloudy lens then you can get it replaced by a clear and artificial lens. However one can slow down the progression of Cataract by following certain health tips:

  • Have regular check-ups of your eyes
  • strict control of blood sugars
  • Stop excessive smoking and avoid drinking alcohol
  • Have healthy eating habits like fruits and vegetables
  • During high exposure to sunlight wear sunglasses.

The first step of treatment is a thorough eye examination starting from the determination of vision, the refractive error and the contrast sensitivity. The patient undergoes a complete slit-lamp biomicroscopy examination followed by a dilated retinal examination. Intraocular pressure measurement is also done. The contributory factors for diminished vision are well documented and explained to the patient.

After concluding and finalizing the cataract treatment, keratometry is done which is a measurement of the curvature of the cornea. Then A-scan is done through which the axial length of the eye is measured. Using the above data IOL biometry, that is the determination of the intraocular lens power is done.

Treatment of cataracts by Phacoemulsification surgery: patricia is mentioned

We here at Patricia facilitate laser surgery for cataracts with the help of advanced technology and types of equipment performed by experienced doctors.

In laser-assisted cataract surgery, an advanced femtosecond laser replaces or assists the use of a hand-held surgical tool for the following steps in cataract surgery:

  • The Corneal Incision
  • The Anterior Capsulorhexis
  • Cataract Fragmentation

The use of a laser has improved the precision, accuracy, and reproducibility of each of these steps, potentially reducing risks and improving visual outcomes of cataract surgery. That is why at Optricia we prefer laser cataract surgeries for effective results.”

Cataract surgery by Phacoemulsification technique is done in maximum cases under topical anesthesia, that means that the eye is anesthetized with the help of drops. no injectable drugs are given to the patient. the procedure begins with making a small incision, as small as 1.8 mm , at the corneal limbus, with the help of a special blade called keratome to enter the eye. Through this small incision, the phacoemulsification probe , the cataract is emulsified inside the eye and removed. the ultrasound energy of the phaco probe divides the cataract in to smaller parts and then its is emulsified and cleared from the eye. After clearing all the cataract fibres, an artificial intra ocular lens is implanted at the same place where the natural lens was located. phacoemulsification procedure is highly skillful surgery, very much dependent upon the surgeon’s dexterity, experience, and volume of surgeries one has performed.
