What is Neuro-Ophthalmology?
The basic working of the human eye includes capturing visuals and transmitting them to the brain. This transmission is done by the optic nerve, any problem in this nerve would affect the visual capabilities and can even lead to irreparable damages.
To treat any disorders related to the neurological structure of the eyes Neuro-Ophthalmology has been developed.
Alert signs
Even a slight discomfort in viewing should be taken seriously. Neuro Ophthalmic issues, if not taken care of on time can lead to complete damage of the optic nerve. Some signs which are the alert signals include double vision and headaches, impairment of color vision, which makes it difficult to differentiate shades of red and green, mild pain in eye movements, visual impairment..
During the eye examination optic nerve issues can be detected. For assessing the further damage to the brain, a CT scan and MRI can also be prescribed. Depending upon the damage and condition of the nerve further procedures will be suggested by the specialist which can be medication or surgery.
Some of the commonly observed conditions related to neuro-ophthalmology include optic neuritis which involves inflammation of the nerve. Another issue can be swelling up of the optic disc which connects the nerve to the retina. Alcohol and tobacco products can not only harm lungs but also the eyes and optic nerve. Diabetes is also a reason for optic nerve damage, and with the increase in diseases the condition keeps on getting worse. Therefore, even a small discomfort in the eyes should be taken seriously.
